This smoothie recipe is inspired by the famous Bloody Mary Cocktail. In fact, the Tomato Strawberry Basil Smoothie will almost draw you to the cozy atmosphere of a piano bar. The best thing is that this drink is alcohol free, filled with antioxidants and could be drank at any time.
You may think, why should you do such compromise? If I want a cocktail, why shouldn’t I have one, a real one, with Vodka and Worcester sauce? To be honest, I would be the last person to dissuade you from that. However, sometimes it is pleasant to enjoy a nice drink without feeling any guilt… and on the contrary enjoying something healthy. Sometimes it is good not to ask oneself: will I be able to drive? Will I be able to wake up easily tomorrow morning and go to work? Moreover, should we always be in this « all or nothing » thinking?
This question came to my mind while I was reading an article of a French magazine – Les Inrocks - « Flexitarism: what if we stop ‘Flexibullshit’». The journalist was criticizing this new trend of “half-vegetarism” which to him hides a deplorable culture of compromise. It is true that the word “flexitarism” which combines “vegetarism” and “flexibility” is quite vague and does not fit with a proper food ethics. It is only about eating less meet, which the journalist finds to be a too easy position. But, why not? Why should you reject the search of balance, only because it seems sometimes too easy? And if flexitarism was only a « word » for a trend that fits in the current wave of vegetarism without accepting its orthodoxy, and that only consists in diminishing meet consumption, what could be wrong with that?
You will appreciate this smoothie and you will take advantage from its benefits whether you are a vegetarian or not, whether you drink alcohol or not, whether you’re looking for a breakfast or a healthy cocktail for your evening. Sometimes I love compromise.
Tomato Strawberry Basil Smoothie
3 tomatoes, peeled and seeded
250 g strawberry
15 basil leaves
½ lemon, juiced
½ tsp pepper
1 tbsp fresh ginger
5 ice cubes
Sugar, at your convenience
Pour all ingredients in a blender. Blend. Add sugar according to your taste. Serve immediately.
