To gently start the year, I suggest a seasonal and colorful smoothie recipe. After the holiday season, which is always full of rich meals and sweets, what is best than smoothies to cleanse the body and to get back to good food habits? I must confess that I also had to try the new blender that I received as a Christmas gift… Thanks to this new processor, I am now able to make all kind of juices and smoothies!
I thought it would be good to start with a pomegranate smoothie because the season is almost over. Every year, when this time happens, I feel sorry not to have enjoyed enough this fruit; in salads, juices, etc… For me, eating pomegranate seeds in a bowl with a spoon is one of the joys of winter. By the way, this fruit has many benefits. Not only it improves digestion – which is much appreciated after holiday overindulgence – , but it is also a powerful antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory. In one word, pomegranate is a sort of ‘superfood’.
For this recipe, I was inspired from the way we perfume fruits in Morocco, with orange blossom water. Used in good quantity, orange blossom adds flavor to juices. To increase vitamins in this recipe so that it could be considered as a whole breakfast, I have added some wheat germ.
I hope this recipe will please you and help you to keep up your good resolutions. Happy new year everyone!
Pomegranate & Orange Blossom Smoothie
1 pomegranate and a half (or 1 large pomegranate)
1 tbsp orange blossom water
1 tbsp wheat germ
5 ice cubes (optional)
Juice the oranges and the lemon. Peel and seed the pomegranate. Pour the juice in the blender (with the desired quantity of pulp); add the pomegranate seeds and the other ingredients. Blend. You can filter the smoothie in a sieve if you want (I personally prefer it whole). Serve cool.
